Assessment of Effects of Amended Bioremediation of Toxic Metal-polluted Soil using Organic Composites and Bacillus sp on Plant Growth Parameters

It has become pertinent to develop improved bioremediation techniques, to avert the deleterious effects of heavy metal pollution on agricultural productivity, and safety of its produce. In this study, cow dung, poultry wastes and their composites used as organic amendments were collected and processed, while Bacillus sp used as plant growth promoting rhizosphere was isolated and identified. Then 24 kg of fertile soil was polluted by introducing 20 mL of 0.1M lead acetate solution, before bagging 5 kg of polluted soil into ten perforated nylons. Soil sample was then analyzed before and after treatment. After mixing with Bacillus sp suspension, two of the pot experiments were amended with each of 0.5 kg cow dung only, 0.5 kg poultry wastes only and 1:1 ratio of their composites. Control samples were set up without amendment, and they were bioremediated for 25 days. Following germination of sown corn seedlings, heights of their shoots and number of leaves were monitored on day 4, weeks 2, 4 and 7, before harvesting for analysis together with soil samples. Results obtained revealed that seedlings grown on treated samples as well as properties of treatment of soil were generally better than those of control samples. Highest percentage increase in organic matter content of soil was recorded in treatment with mixture of cow dung only and Bacillus sp, with 9.28% and 7.63% increase at 33.75 mg/kg and 52.55 mg/kg of lead (Pb) pollution. Seedlings grown on samples treated with poultry wastes only, recorded the highest protein content of 161.25±5.5 mg/g, 104.99±4.95 mg/g and 79.75±3.2 mg/g protein contents, at 32.75 mg/kg, 42.02 mg/kg and 52.44 mg/kg levels of Pb pollution, respectively. The amendments also reduced bioaccumulation of Pb in corn seedlings, which was in the order; stem<leaf<root. Therefore, these amendments can be exploited for improved bioremediation of heavy metals.

Investigating the impact of soil properties, application rates and environmental conditions on pyroxasulfone dissipation and its ecotoxicological effects on soil health in aridisols of Punjab.

This study is to understand the fate and ecological consequences of pyroxasulfone in aridisols of Punjab, a detailed dissipation study in soil, its influence on soil enzymes, microbial count and succeeding crops was evaluated. Half-lives (DT50) increased with an increase in the application rate of pyroxasulfone. Dissipation of pyroxasulfone decreased with increase in organic matter content of soil and was slower in clay loam soil (DT50 12.50 to 24.89) followed by sandy loam (DT50 8.91 to 17.78) and loamy sand soil (DT50 6.45 to 14.89). Faster dissipation was observed under submerged conditions (DT50 2.9 to 20.99days) than under field capacity conditions (DT50 6.45 to 24.89days). Dissipation increased with increase in temperature with DT50 varying from 6.46 to 24.88, 4.87 to 22.89 and 2.97 to 20.99days at 25 ± 2, 35 ± 2 and 45 ± 2°C, respectively. Dissipation was slower under sterile conditions and about 23.87- to 33.74-fold increase in DT50 was observed under sterile conditions as compared to non-sterile conditions. The application of pyroxasulfone showed short-lived transitory effect on dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and soil microbial activity while herbicide has non-significant effect on soil urease activity. PCA suggested that dehydrogenase and bacteria were most sensitive among enzymatic and microbial activities. In efficacy study, pyroxasulfone effectively controlled Phalaris minor germination, with higher efficacy in loamy sand soil (GR50 2.46µgmL-1) as compared to clay loam soil (GR50 5.19µgmL-1).

Technological methods for increasing the yield and fertility reproduction when growing zucchini on sod-podzolic light loamy soil in natural and climatic conditions of Republic of Belarus

   Relevance. To improve the quality of life and expand the taste preferences of the population of Belarus, it is necessary to expand the range of vegetable crops with high yields, marketability and product quality, adapted to the natural and climatic conditions of the republic. In this regard, improving technological methods for cultivating such a crop as zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) is of scientific and practical importance.   Materials and Methods. The research was carried out on the territory of a private farm in the village of Chukhny, Smorgon district. Field and laboratory studies were carried out using generally accepted methods and guidelines.   Results. Substantiated the feasibility of cultivating green manure crops in combination with the local application of thermoammonia-disinfected compost when growing zucchini in seedlings on sod-podzolic light loamy soils in the natural climatic conditions of Belarus. The developed technological methods ensure the reproduction of soil fertility, increased yield, and production of high quality products without the use of mineral fertilizers. When using green manure and disinfected compost, the nitrate content in zucchini cv. Bonus, grown without mineral fertilizers, was in the range of 280-320 mg/kg. To reproduce the fertility of soddy-podzolic light loamy soils when growing zucchini in the natural climatic conditions of Belarus, it is advisable to use oats, oilseed radish and peas as green manure fertilizers. This technological technique increases the content of organic matter in the soil by 0.8-1.3 %. Together with green manure, adding thermo-ammonia-disinfected compost into a hole when planting zucchini seedlings ensures an increase in organic matter content by 1.2-1.5 % in the compost localization zone. During the decomposition of organic matter of green manure crops and disinfected compost applied locally, nutrients are released in quantities sufficient to form a high yield of zucchini with a nitrate content below the maximum permissible concentration. Thus, when grown on soddy-podzolic light loamy soils in the natural climatic conditions of Belarus, the proposed technological methods make it possible to obtain high-quality products and significantly increase the yield of zucchini due to green manure in combination with the local application of disinfected compost without the use of mineral fertilizers.

Identifying the key sources of metal (loid) deposition to remote Tasmanian lakes: is legacy mining a problem?

Reports have shown that even remote lakes have been negatively affected by anthropogenic activities. This study used metal concentrations and enrichment factors to comprehensively determine key metal sources and identify potential impacts of recent anthropogenic activity in remote Central Highland Tasmanian (Australia) lakes. Metal concentrations (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) in these lakes remain below Australian interim sediment quality guidelines but have been slowly increasing since the start of the twentieth century. This increase is likely related to increasing organic matter content, rather than any direct, increased input of metals. The largest anthropogenic impact to these systems was damming, which typically led to an increase in organic matter content either directly, by the trapping of particles and nutrients, or indirectly, by stimulating primary production in the lake. This increased organic matter content, in turn, increased the retention of metals, manifesting as an increase to measured metal concentrations. Minor impacts are the historical use of lead shot, leaded petrol, and industrial processes, which may have contributed to the higher Pb enrichment, compared to the other studied metals, in these lakes. Despite recent concerns of metal contamination in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from distant mining activities, there is no strong evidence in this study indicating that lakes in the Central Highlands (a similar distance away) have been impacted by long-distance atmospheric deposition. This is likely related to the decreased rainfall, and thus decreased rates of wet deposition of aerosols in the east of Tasmania, compared to that of the west and in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Afforestation increases soil inorganic N supply capacity and lowers plant N limitation in subtropical karst areas

The positive effects of afforestation in karst rocky desertification areas are often limited by soil nitrogen (N) availability. However, how plant N limitation evolves in response to prolonged afforestation as well as the mechanisms underlying plant N limitation and soil N availability are poorly understood. In this study, plant leaves and soil samples were collected from cropland, Dodonaea viscosa plantations 10, 20 and 40 years after their establishment on abandoned cropland in a karst rocky desertification area. The natural succession of shrubland served as the control. Foliar N/phosphorus (P) stoichiometry was used to evaluate plant N limitation, and the N concentration and δ15N value of foliar and soil were measured to evaluate the changes in soil N availability. Soil N transformation rates were also determined, using 15N tracing technique to elucidate the mechanism underlying soil inorganic N availability. The plant community-level foliar N/P ratio (13.5) was lower than 14 following 10-y afforestation, indicating that plant growth is predominantly N limited. With the prolonged afforestation, the plant community-level foliar N/P ratio increased to 14.0–15.5, suggesting decreased plant N limitation. This could be attributed to increased soil N availability confirmed by the raises in the N concentration and δ15N of plant community-level foliar and soil δ15N with prolonged afforestation. Compared to cropland, D. viscosa afforestation increased the soil inorganic N supply capacity, by stimulating organic N mineralization, heterotrophic nitrification and the release of adsorbed ammonium, more obviously with prolonged afforestation. The rates of mineralization, heterotrophic nitrification and the release of adsorbed ammonium correlated significantly and positively with the plant community-level foliar N concentration, N/P ratio, and δ15N, indicating that a larger soil inorganic N supply alleviates plant N limitation. This effect can be attributed to the increases in organic matter content, bacterial and fungal abundances and soil structure improvement following afforestation, all of which facilitate mineralization and heterotrophic nitrification. However, plant N limitation after 40 years of afforestation still exists, suggesting that monoculture afforestation may need to be adapted to maximize soil N availability and to alleviate plant N limitation in karst rocky desertification areas.

Quantitative Assessment of the Effect of Agency-Led Prescribed Burns and Cultural Burns on Soil Properties in Southeastern Australia

Fire management techniques play a critical role in mitigating the impact of bushfires on communities and ecosystems. In Australia, government agencies implement hazard reduction burn programs, while Indigenous communities have used fire for ecosystem management for thousands of years. The positive effect of prescribed burning goes beyond bushfire risk mitigation, with impacts also on soil and ecosystem health. This study evaluates the effects of prescribed burning on soil properties, with implications for soil and ecosystem health. Two fire management techniques were evaluated: agency-led prescribed burning and cultural burning. Both fire treatments resulted in an increase in soil moisture, showing that they positively affect the soil water balance (the greater effect seen following the agency-led burn). Both fire treatments also resulted in a decrease in soil bulk density and an increase in organic matter content, with the greater effect seen for soils affected by the Indigenous-led burn. These results show that both fire management techniques positively affect soil health, with important consequences for aboveground ecosystem health. Cultural burning is the most efficient to promote reduced soil bulk density (important for nutrient availability and microbial activity) and increase carbon and nitrogen stores.

Irrigation as an Effective Way to Increase Potato Yields in Northern China: A Meta-Analysis

A meta-analysis was conducted with the aim of exploring the influence of irrigation on potato yield, evapotranspiration (ET), and water-use efficiency (WUE) in northern China, considering factors such as irrigation methods, growing region, irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE), irrigation frequency, soil types, and nitrogen (N) fertilizer rate. Overall, irrigation significantly increased potato yield and ET by an average of 45 and 54% compared to non-irrigation, respectively, but did not significantly increase the WUE. The increase in potato yield under irrigation is the most evident in aeolian sandy soil in northeast China and northwest China. Drip irrigation demonstrated the highest positive impact on both yield and WUE. Optimal yields were achieved with an irrigation amount ranging from 100 to 200 mm, while the highest WUE was observed with an irrigation amount of 30–50 mm. When the amount of irrigation exceeded 100 mm, the irrigation significantly resulted in decreased WUE compared to non-irrigation. The relative increase in yield per unit of irrigation amount and IWUE gradually decreased and eventually stabilized when the irrigation amount exceeded 100 mm. Therefore, the yield and WUE perform best when the irrigation amount is below 100 mm and the irrigation frequency is less than three times for sprinkling and flood irrigation methods. The greatest increases in yield and WUE under irrigation were found under a moderate N rate (150–250 kg N ha−1). Additionally, the relative increase in yield per unit of irrigation amount decreases gradually as the organic matter content increases. These findings suggest that the optimal benefits from irrigation might be realized when the irrigation amount is below 100 mm, with a moderate nitrogen fertilizer application and an irrigation frequency of three times. However, it is essential to consider local environmental factors such as the growing region, soil types, and organic carbon content.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study on the Occurrence of Shale Oil in Hybrid Nanopores.

The molecular dynamics simulation was used to simulate the influence of the composite wall stacking effect on shale oil occurrence. The kerogen-illite heterogeneous wall pore model was established to study the effects of temperature, pore size, and wall component ratio on the adsorption ratio and diffusion capacity of shale oil. The calculation results show that the fluid density distribution in the hybrid nanopore is not uniform. When the pore size increases, the proportion of the first adsorption layer to the total adsorption amount decreases rapidly, and the phenomenon of the "solid-like layer" of shale oil in small pores is more obvious. In addition, increases in temperature have little effect on the density peak of the first adsorption layer. With increases in organic matter content in the shale pore model, the diffusion coefficient of fluid decreases gradually, along with adsorption capacity. The influence of the irregular arrangement of kerogen molecules on the adsorption of shale oil is greater than the influence of surface roughness caused by illite on the adsorption.

Study of Modified Primary Compression Index Tests and a Regression Model for Municipal Solid Waste Considering the Temperature Effect

The modified primary compression index (MPCI) of municipal solid waste (MSW) is an important parameter for describing the primary consolidation settlement of MSW. It is beneficial to calculate the settlement and storage capacity of landfills accurately by calculating the MPCI of MSW correctly. This article studies the primary consolidation compression characteristics and influencing factors of MSW through a consolidation experiment considering temperature control. The experimental results show that the MPCI increases with an increase in temperature, decreases with an increase in dry weight, increases with an increase in water content, and increases with an increase in organic matter content. According to the above findings, an MPCI regression fitting model was established. The reliability and accuracy of the model was validated by the experimental results of the indoor bioreactor test considering temperature control.

Benthic Foraminifera as Proxies of Paleoenvironmental Changes in the Sant’Elia-Foxi Canyon (Gulf of Cagliari, Italy, Western Tyrrhenian Sea)

Marine coastal areas are highly dynamic and fragile environments characterised by a complex interplay of biological, physical, and chemical factors. These areas are also affected by anthropogenic activities with the discharge of organic and inorganic contaminants that alters the quality of the environment. In this work, the effects of anthropogenic activities (i.e., urban and industrial development) on benthic foraminifera have been investigated along the A2TM core collected from the Sant’Elia-Foxi Canyon (Gulf of Cagliari, Sardinia—western Tyrrhenian Sea). The Gulf of Cagliari has experienced intense urbanisation since the beginning of the twentieth century with the establishment of petrochemical complexes and harbour activities. The A2TM core, dating from 1907 to 2013, was analysed with an integrated approach that includes grain size, organic matter, and benthic foraminifera characterisation compared with geochemical characterisation. The variations in the composition of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages and the Margalef diversity index are related to the altered environmental conditions that reflect the historical development of the area and to the land-based activities surrounding the Gulf of Cagliari. The statistical analysis identifies two main intervals (i.e., the years 1907–1986 and 1986–2013) that are typified by different benthic foraminiferal assemblages and diversity values. Accordingly, the increases in organic matter content and both organic and inorganic contaminants are well mirrored by a major drop in foraminiferal diversity after 1973 and a major foraminiferal turnover after 1989. The composition of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the uppermost part of the core (i.e., 1989–2013) might suggest a lowering of the oxygen availability at the seafloor. These changes might be related to the increase in organic matter and the silty fraction in the same interval likely triggered by damming on land and wetland reclamation.

Comparative Study of Fertilizers in Tomato-Grown Soils: Soil Quality, Sustainability, and Carbon/Water Footprints

This manuscript delves into the pivotal role of sustainable agriculture in addressing environmental challenges and meeting the nutritional demands of a burgeoning global population. The primary objective is to assess the impact of a recently developed eco-friendly fertilizer, denoted as SBO, which arises from the blend of organic and mineral components derived from agricultural waste, sulfur, and residual orange materials. These elements are bound together with bentonite. This study compares SBO with distinct fertilizer treatments, including horse manure (HM) and nitrogen–phosphorous–potassium (NPK), on two diverse tomato-growing soils, each characterized by unique chemical and biological properties. Furthermore, the research extends to evaluate the environmental implications of these fertilizers, with a specific focus on their carbon and water footprints. Soils have been chemically and biochemically analyzed, and carbon and water footprints (CF and WF, respectively) have been assessed. The results reveal substantial enhancements in soil quality with the application of SBO fertilizer. Both soils undergo a transition towards near-neutral pH levels, an increase in organic matter content, and heightened microbial biomass. SBO-treated soils exhibit notably superior enzyme activities. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results affirm the sustainability of the SBO-based system, boasting the lowest CF, while NPK demonstrates the highest environmental impact. Consistently, the WF analysis aligns with these findings, indicating that SBO necessitates the least water for tomato production. In summary, this study underscores the critical importance of adopting sustainable fertilization practices for enhancing soil quality and reducing environmental footprints in agriculture. The promising results offer potential benefits for both food production and environmental conservation.

Effect of soil properties on adsorption, degradation and leaching potential of four herbicides

ABSTRACT Once a herbicide is introduced into the environment, some risks are inevitable as it can trigger accumulation, leaching and runoff, thus contaminating soil and water resources. For a proper risk assessment, the present study investigates the adsorption, degradation and leaching behaviour of pretilachlor, butachlor, anilofos and pendimethalin. Among the studied herbicides, pendimethalin (KFads 1.466 ± 0.087 to 2.569 ± 0.072 µg1–1/n g−1 ml1/n; DT50 65.34–120.29 days) has the highest adsorption and persistence in soil, followed by anilofos (KFads 0.967 ± 0.063 to 1.637 ± 0.077 µg1–1/n g−1 ml1/n; DT50 37.12–77.63 days), butachlor (KFads 0.722 ± 0.077 to 1.273 ± 0.067 µg1–1/n g−1 ml1/n; DT50 31.23–65.13 days) and pretilachlor (KFads 0.834 ± 0.066 to 1.422 ± 0.071 µg1–1/n g−1 ml1/n; DT50 26.32–61.36 days). Pretilachlor, butachlor, anilofos and pendimethalin leached up to 40–60, 30–40, 20–30 and 10–20 cm soil layers, respectively, indicating that pendimethalin was least mobile in the studied soils. Increase in simulated rainfall (300 mm) increased the downward mobility of herbicides. Among different soils, herbicide degradation and leaching were highest in loamy sand and decreased with an increase in organic matter (OM) content, while adsorption was lowest in loamy sand and increased with an increase in OM content. The addition of farmyard manure amendment reduced the mobility of pretilachlor, butachlor, pendimethalin and anilofos, and these leached up to 20–30, 20–30, 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil layers, respectively. The results indicated that organic amendments can be used as an effective management practice for controlling groundwater contamination.

Effect of humic acid and fulvic acid on mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer stabilized soft soil

Geopolymer with eco-friendly and excellent performance is regarded as a new generation of soil stabilizer. Although geopolymer is effective in improving the mechanical and durability properties of soft soil, the mechanism of the influence of organic matter (humic acid and fulvic acid) in soft soil is often neglected. Therefore, in this work, the effects of different contents (0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%, 3.5%, 4.5%, 5.5%) of humic acid and fulvic acid on the mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer stabilized soft soil (GSSS) were elucidated. The mechanical characteristics, durability and microstructure of GSSS were characterized by UCS test, sulphate solution attack test, XRD and SEM analysis. The samples for the UCS test were cured in a standard curing box (temperature regulated at 20 ± 2 ℃ and humidity not less than 95%) for 7 d/28 d, while the samples for the sulphate solution attack test were cured in a standard curing box for 28 d beforehand. The results demonstrated that there existed a limit content (4.5% and 3.5%) for the effect of humic acid and fulvic acid on the UCS of GSSS, respectively, beyond which the UCS of GSSS almost ceased to change with the increase of humic acid and fulvic acid contents. With the increase of organic matter content, the damage mode of GSSS changed from brittle damage to plastic damage accompanied by the decrease of peak stress. After exposure to Na2SO4 solution, the UCS deterioration rate of GSSS incorporated with fulvic acid was faster compared to humic acid when the organic matter content did not exceed 2.5%, while the opposite was true when the organic matter content exceeded 2.5%.

THE MIDDLE EOCENE CLIMATIC OPTIMUM (MECO) IMPACT ON THE BENTHIC AND PLANKTIC FORAMINIFERAL RESILIENCE FROM A SHALLOW-WATER SEDIMENTARY RECORD

We present here new quantitative analyses of planktic and benthic foraminifera to assess the impact of the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO, ~40 Ma) on these biotic groups studied along a shallow-water succession rich in larger benthic foraminifera (Sealza, Liguria, NW Italy). The MECO is one of the major Eocene global warming events, characterized by ~4–6°C warming, shifts in the global carbon cycle, and rise in atmospheric pCO2. The Sealza succession is interpreted as the product of a drowning ramp influenced by tectonic activity and provides an exceptional chance to compare biotic variations in shallow-water assemblages with deep-water communities across the MECO. In the section, the MECO interval is tentatively constrained by stable isotope oxygen data and calcareous plankton biostratigraphy. The marked decline in abundance of the epifaunal benthic Cibicidoides across the lower-middle part of the MECO suggests a decrease in oxygenation at the seafloor. Further evidence of oxygen depletion is the increase in organic matter content (TOC) of the sediment and the presence of infaunal genera Uvigerina and Bolivina. The planktic foraminiferal assemblages record the MECO warming in the upper water column as the mixed-layer warm index genera Acarinina and Morozovelloides markedly increase in abundance. In the post-MECO interval, here poorly exposed, cooler conditions are indicated by the dominance of the cold-water index genus Subbotina. Remarkably, Acarinina decline in abundance in the upper MECO interval and never recover. The MECO perturbance permanently impacted the benthic and planktic communities at Sealza that exceeded the tipping point to move to a new regime, thus proving the fauna to be not resilient, but also not recording any extinctions.  

Influencing factors of coal elastic parameters based on the generalized Gassmann equation: A case study in Yuwang colliery, eastern Yunnan province

AbstractCoal elastic parameters are an important index reflecting the material composition and porosity, which can be used to guide reservoir evaluation and the safe mining of coal and coalbed methane. In this study, coal samples collected from coal seams #2, #3, #7 + 8 and #9 in the Yuwang colliery, eastern Yunnan, were studied, and the influences of organic matter, ash content and porosity on the elastic parameters of coal samples were investigated. The results show that the elastic parameters of coal are negatively correlated with organic matter content and porosity, and positively correlated with ash content. This means that the bulk modulus and primary‐wave velocity of coal decrease with a gradual increase in organic matter content or porosity and increase with a gradual increase in ash content. The main reason for this is that the ash modulus is typically higher than that of coal. When the ash content gradually increases, the contribution of ash to the equivalent modulus of coal increases, whereas the contribution of organic matter and pores decreases. In this study, the primary‐wave velocity of the target coal seam was fitted based on the generalized Gassmann equation. The calculation results were consistent with the observations and the relative error was within 7%. According to the distribution behaviour of elastic parameters, this provides adequate data support for the prediction of gas content in coal mines and ensures safe and green mining of coal resources.

Ecohydrological influences of biocrusts and their pathways in a desert steppe ecosystem

AbstractBiological soil crusts (biocrusts) are a prevalent form of organic cover in drylands across the world, and they play a crucial role in shaping the ecohydrological processes and functioning of dryland ecosystems. However, in desert steppe ecosystems, the ecohydrological influences of biocrusts and their pathways have not yet been thoroughly understood. Here, we examined the influences of three types of biocrusts (cyanobacterial, cyanobacterial‐moss mixed, and moss biocrusts) on soil water retention and infiltration in a typical desert steppe of northwestern China, and we also analysed the possible pathways through which biocrusts affect them. Accordingly, the field capacity (θf, indicating soil water‐holding capacity) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks, indicating soil infiltrability) of each biocrust‐covered soil and bare soil were measured both at 0–5 and 5–10 cm depths, on Arenosols (loamy sand texture) and Calcisols (silty loamy texture), respectively. Our results showed that the presence of biocrusts increased surface soil (0–5 cm) water‐holding capacity while decreased soil infiltrability, creating a remarkable impact on soil water retention and infiltration. As compared to bare soil, the θf of cyanobacterial, cyanobacterial‐moss mixed, and moss biocrusts were increased by 16.5%, 21.4%, and 21.7% on Arenosols and by 9.6%, 18.9%, and 22.8% on Calcisols, while their Ks were reduced by 43.2%, 56.2%, and 38.2% on Arenosols, and by 49.0%, 68.7%, and 36.0% on Calcisols, respectively. The development of biocrusts on sandy textured soil had a more pronounced impact on both soil water retention and infiltration than loamy textured soil. We found that biocrusts mainly changed soil water retention and infiltration by increasing the contents of clay and organic matter. More specifically, the increase in clay content led to a more significant effect compared to the increase in organic matter content on Arenosols, while the opposite influence was observed on Calcisols. Among the three types of biocrusts, the soil infiltrability of the mixed biocrusts was the lowest, perhaps due to the interaction between the accumulation of clay particles by moss and the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances by cyanobacteria. Our study highlights the remarkable ecohydrological impacts of biocrusts on desert steppe ecosystems, and the results imply that it is of great necessary to integrate biocrusts and their influences into our understanding of ecohydrological processes in global drylands.

Sediment variability in intermittently extracted sandbanks in the Belgian part of the North Sea

Introduction: In the Belgian part of the North Sea, sand for beach and foreshore nourishments is extracted from the Hinder Banks, about 40 km offshore. The extraction is not screened for shells and other very coarse material, as is the case for sand extraction for industrial use. Intermittent but intensive sand extraction took place from 2012 to 2019 on the Oosthinder, and since 2019 on the Noordhinder.Methods: To better understand sediment variability during human-induced disturbance of the seabed, both sandbanks have been monitored using multibeam bathymetry and backscatter, and Reineck box cores on board of the Research Vessel Belgica A962. Acoustic and sediment data were preferably jointly collected within a one-week period to substantiate the interrelationships.Result: Very well-sorted medium sands with low backscatter values (−28 to −33 dB) are detected near the top of the sandbank, while (moderately) well-sorted coarser sands and shell fragments with high backscatter values (−20 to −24 dB) are detected in the deeper parts of the sandbank slope. Although natural conditions such as sandwave movement and storms may mask early sediment changes, 7 years of intermittent and intensive sand extraction on the upper parts of a gentle sandbank slope caused a seabed deepening of at least 2 m, a backscatter decrease between 5 and 8 dB, a reduction in carbonate content by 1%–5% and an increase in organic matter content by 1%–2%. Two years after the cessation of the operations, the carbonate content increased and organic matter content decreased by 1%–2%.Discussion: Natural variability of sediments remains dependent on depth and geomorphology in both undisturbed, as well as recently and longer disturbed sandbank systems. However, a spreading of the more homogeneous, very well-sorted medium sands with limited carbonate content from the sandbank crest to the upper parts of the sandbank slope was observed, as sand extraction progressed. Subsequently, possible first signs of a slow return to the original sediment characteristics were detected.

Soil Erosion Satellite-Based Estimation in Cropland for Soil Conservation

Intensive cropland expansion for an increasing population has driven soil degradation worldwide. Modeling how agroecosystems respond to variations in soil attributes, relief and crop management dynamics can guide soil conservation. This research presents a new approach to evaluate soil loss by water erosion in cropland using the RUSLE model and Synthetic Soil Image (spectroscopy technique), which uses time series remotely sensed environmental, agricultural and anthropic variables, in the southeast region of São Paulo State, Brazil. The availability of the open-access satellite images of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Landsat satellite images provided ten years of rainfall data and 35 years of exposed soil surface. The bare soil surface and agricultural land use were extracted, and the multi-temporal rainfall erosivity was assessed. We predict soil maps’ attributes (texture and organic matter) through innovative soil spectroscopy techniques to assess the soil erodibility and soil loss tolerance. The erosivity, erodibility, and topography obtained by the Earth observations were adopted to estimate soil erosion in four scenarios of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) residue coverage (0%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) in five years of the sugarcane cycle: the first year of sugarcane harvest and four subsequent harvesting years from 2013 to 2017. Soil loss tolerance means 4.3 Mg ha−1 exceeds the minimum rate in 40% of the region, resulting in a total soil loss of ~6 million Mg yr−1 under total coverage management (7 Mg ha−1). Our findings suggest that sugarcane straw production has not been sufficient to protect the soil loss against water erosion. Thus, straw removal is unfeasible unless alternative conservation practices are adopted, such as minimum soil tillage, contour lines, terracing and other techniques that favor increases in organic matter content and soil flocculating cations. This research also identifies a spatiotemporal erosion-prone area that requests an immediately sustainable land development guide to restore and rehabilitate the vulnerable ecosystem service. The high-resolution spatially distribution method provided can identify soil degradation-prone areas and the cropland expansion frequency. This information may guide farms and the policymakers for a better request of conservation practices according to site-specific management variation.

Preliminary Studies on How to Reduce the Effects of Salinity

Soil salinization is an important factor contributing to the deterioration of soil environment and low crop yield in arable land. In this study, the effects of five fulvic acid applications (0 (CK), 150 (T1), 300 (T2), 450 (T3), and 600 (T4) kg·ha−1) on soil physicochemical properties, humus content of each component, and cotton (Xinluzao No. 82) growth were investigated. It was confirmed that fulvic acid improved soil water-stable macroaggregates, moisture distribution, and desalinization. 0–20 cm soil relative desalinization rate was significantly increased by 2–11.75%. The pH value decreased by 0.09–0.21. The soil organic matter content was significantly increased compared to CK (p < 0.05), with 7.5–26.93% increase in organic matter content in 0–20 cm soil layer. Soil humification was increased to different degrees, with the most significant increase in humic carbon content in T3 treatment (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase in leaf area index (LAI), stem diameter, and plant height of cotton (p < 0.05). Cotton yield increased by 3.64–8.36% compared to CK (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that cotton yield was significantly correlated with the soil textures of saline soils. The best improvement was achieved with 450 kg·ha−1 fulvic acid. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the improvement of saline soils in arid zones to enhance crop growth and yield.

Polygenic soils in the southern central Ecuadorian highlands as the result of long-lasting pedogenesis, geodynamic processes and climate change

In the high altitude (>3000 m asl) grasslands of northern Ecuador, the Páramo ecosystem, soils generally formed on recent volcanic ashes being <10,000 years old in the northern and central part of the cordilleras. With time these soils evolved in to non-allophanic Andisols with hydric properties such as evidenced in profiles from the Cajas massif located in the western central Cordillera. However soils at the Fierro Urcu massif and at the Oña plateau at the eastern Cordillera formed on a non pyroclastic indurated parent material. Compared to non-allophanic Andisols from the Cajas massif, they present similar morphological properties with a dark 50 cm thick carbon-rich (80–120 g kg−1) topsoil with a very low bulk density (<0.65 g cm−3) and high water retention. These top soils appear to have originated from fall-out, derived from close and still active volcanoes of Sangay and/or Tungurahua, both located in a distance of 200–250 km NNE of the Oña Massif, respectively. Geochemical determinations of trace and rare earth elements, however, confirm the lack of volcanic ash contribution in the Saraguro and Oña samples based on Eu/Eu* and Ce/Ce* anomalies relative to the lack of such anomalies in the Cajas samples. The Oña and Saraguro soils appear to be the result of a long-lasting double pedogenic process. The basement of the Saraguro soil is a Ferralsol with gibbsite and kaolinite and the Oña soil is a 5 m thick kaolinitic Ferralsol. The upper part of these profiles are the result of a major climatic change with increasing colder conditions, generating an increase in organic matter content and a very acidic environment leading to the instability of kaolinite and gibbsite, thereby liberating large amounts of free aluminium and iron oxides. The evolution of these very highly evolved Ferralsols into soils with Andic properties is proposed to be the result of rapid tectonic uplift calculated at a rate exceeding 0.6 mm/year in the region leading to a general decrease in temperature limiting carbon mineralization and favouring the formation of organo-metallic complexes. The soils studied here reveal compelling new evidence and information about the uplift of a part of the Ecuadorean Andes.
